Jay Smooth weighed in on Donald Sterling, and pointed out what a terrible, manipulative boyfriend Sterling is – and that it’s frustrating how much more scorn racist words get than racist deeds:
Re the abusive boyfriend: The sad thing is that Sterling is the type of “alpha male” that is in so many ways still seen as desirable. He’s white, rich, successful… Yes, he’s also a bit old and a philanderer. But large parts of mainstream (pop) culture (not only in the US) still seem fascinated by men like him, the most obvious example being Hugh Hefner. Even fictional abusive assholes are talked about as desirable and sexy as long as they are rich, white, and dominant – see the problematic success of Fifty Shades of Grey and the Christian Grey character.
All of this is sickening.
