The problem is, patriarchal masculinity is largely defined by violence and/or a man’s control over women. So we have a standard of masculinity – that is associated largely with power, influence, importance, dominance – that can only exist in relation by subjugating and harming women. This of course ties into homophobia (Real Men Fuck Women)! And it also is greatly associated with capitalism and other Bad Things. Patriarchal masculinity is nothing to strive for. I am not interested in becoming part of the Good Ol’ Boys club because the Good Ol’ Boys club is, necessarily, defined by its rejection and contempt towards women. Empowerment is not ‘women reaching the same social position as men’ because, hypothetically, in misogyny-free world men will not occupy the same space and power and privilege! The power that men hold only exists because women are subjugated!
Yeah, pretty much.
This ‘patriarchal masculinity’ is also what is implied when people complain-write about the alleged ‘end of men.’ Be it by right-wing christians and quasi-sects like Mars Hill (excellent portrait in the current issue of bitch) or various political and lifestyle commentators freaking out because there are 20 women senators after the last US election.
I don’t think the ‘end of men’ is near. Not at all. Not even of white men. However: If the ‘end of men’ is the end of this kind of patriarchal masculinity, I’m not scared. I’m glad.
And I’m a man.
Thoughts?
