Gleichzeit

Wir schreib diese Zeilen inmitten der Ereignisse. Der 7. Oktober vergeht nicht, seine zerstörerische Wucht dauert an und hält uns in einer Gegenwart des Schreckens fest. Die Gräber sind noch frisch. Die Geiseln sind noch nicht befreit. Gaza und seine Bevölkerung sind einer graueneregenden Zerstörung preisgegeben. Das allgegenwärtige Leid bestimmt unseren Alltag. Die Trauerarbeit kann noch nicht beginnen. Aber wir schreiben.

Fascinating and important: This book is the publication of the correspondence since October 7, 2023 between Ofer Waldmann (in Israel) and Sasha Marianna Salzmann (in Vienna/Berlin). The two authors – and friends – write about their everyday lives, the ongoing impact of October 7 and the shifting lines of discourse in Israel and Europe. Above all, it is, as the blurb at Suhrkamp says, “a touching testimony to a friendship.” A must-read for all these reasons.

*We are writing these lines in the midst of events. October 7 will not pass, its destructive force continues and holds us in a presence of horror. The graves are still fresh. The hostages have not yet been freed. Gaza and its population are exposed to a horrifying destruction. The omnipresent suffering determines our everyday lives. The work of mourning cannot yet begin. But we are writing.
