An unusual emergency medicine case:
A critically ill man in the northern Norwegian city of Bodø needed anECMO machine, which is normally used to supplement a patient’s own heart and lungs. That was a problem, as the nearest ECMO machine was in Trondheim, which was 280 miles to the south,
The Norwegian solution – call the local air force, who just happen to have two F-16 Viper making the trip to Moss near Trondheim for an exercise. The air force delivered the ECMO/ECLS machine within 40 minutes. The pilot handed the life-saving machine over to EMTs, (I assume.)
