I find it is quite an entitled position to demand knowing and finding everything about everyone at all times — a position whose representatives remain oddly silent when it comes to anonymous harassment on sites like twitter. Being able to find and know everything about someone is only applicable in some cases, it seems.

Being a woman online can be dangerous business, and one for which the danger multiplies x-fold when you’re not straight, white and cis.

We grow up in digital space, learning to hide our identity as good as we can. Not because it’s more convenient. But because it’s safer. Removing data online is not about luxury, it’s about safety. The link to your phone number or the mention of your address. The smear campaigns. The slander and harassment that invite strangers to just jump aboard the hate train.
