Petition to ban old men from writing books just because they don’t know how to use an iPhone
Petition to have the youth in this country to actually educate themselves instead of spitting out some bullshit they read on some shitty post on facebook that’s untrue, and continues to spread like wildfire.
In 2012, young adults have set the record of completing both high school and college and are on course to become the most educated generation in America history. Maybe you should follow the example of ‘the youth in this country’ and do the same.
This generation isn’t so much stupid as they are ignorant to important issues that effect them. There are plenty of young people with B.A degrees who don’t even know who their governor or mayor is.
Another thing that occurs to me that is massively flawed in these discussions…
When we say ‘THIS GENERATION’ we’re talking about it as if it’s a static, unchanging demographic. Comparing people in their 50’s to people in their 20’s.
I want comparative data from people in their twenties from past generations. I want data on how many people aged 10-25 knew about their local government in 1965 (No cherry-picking for loudly political young people, either). I want to see hard data proving that young people of the past were more likely to [quoting the amazon blurb for this book] read literature, visit museums, vote, explain basic scientific methods, recount basic American history, name their local political representatives, or locate Iraq or Israel on a map.
Until that data is present, this book is basically ‘WAH, YOUNG PEOPLE DON’T HAVE THE KNOWLEDGES OR INTERESTS OR CONCERNS OR VIEWPOINTS THAT OLD PEOPLE DO!!!!’
Also, never forget that all throughout the Western capitalist world, young people are pushed into forms of education that are increasingly less open to general, “free”, critical thought: planned day activities with little actual leisure time beginning in preschool, reduced mobility for “security reasons”, standardized tests, more and more required (corporate) internships, sky-rocketing tuition, fewer “good” jobs for B.A. graduates, high student loan payments, etc.
Responsible for all those shifts? The boomers high on their own nostalgia now complaining about the young generation. Looking back, everyone was a fucking Allen Ginsberg.
Thoughts?
