“Just” eating healthy instead of junk food isn’t that easy for many, many people (not only) in the US.
Via moniquill:
“According to a study from the University of Washington, the rift between healthy grub and junk food is wider than it’s ever been. Researchers were able to buy 2,000 calories of junk food for $3.52 — that’s an entire day’s caloric intake — where nutritious foods cost them a whopping $36 for the same 2,000 calories.”—
10 Things You Didn’t Know About Food In The USA

The introductory Buzzfeed list linked to above also includes the significant number of people in the States that struggle with food insecurity and or live in food deserts.
I knew there was a large difference in cost between ‘healthy’ and ‘junk’ food, but almost cannot believe the absolute numbers Buzzfeed lists. That is staggering. I’d like to know where and what the researchers exactly bought, so I could put it in context with what I pay for ‘healthier’ food here in Germany. I don’t think it’s as bad here as in the given example.
(Of course Buzzfeed doesn’t link to the actual study but to another list of pictures.)
