ECHO: How old are you, Mr. Stevens? I understand you were a college boy.

SUFJAN: I am ageless. I went to a liberal arts college, like a good American. I was well rounded. I developed critical-thinking skills and a liberal worldview. I played oboe in the orchestra and did intramural tennis. I joined literary clubs, wrote for the student newspaper, participated in women’s rights marches on Capitol Hill. I smoked cigarettes and overcame my fear of heights. I went skinny-dipping in Lake Michigan and kissed girls on factory rooftops. I was living the great American dream, like everyone else.
