Gomez to Gay Players: “Come Out!”

1–2 minutes

read

In an interview published today, FC Bayern Munich forward Mario Gomez encouraged gay soccer players to come out of the closet, stating that it is no longer a “taboo” to be gay. This could be seen as a statement of support from one of the most famous current professional soccer players in the Bundesliga. However, isn’t soccer and the surrounding (fan) culture one of the last big bastions of homophobic machismo? Isn’t it awfully easy for Gomez to make such a statement (assuming he’s not gay.)? Isn’t it almost arrogant of him?  I’m torn.
